Smart storage management system optimises logistics and improves safety
Around 200 tons of paper reels travel on a daily basis from the Rauma paper mill to the port among urban transport. Outdated transportation equipment and tightened safety requirements made it necessary to acquire new trailers and upgrade the reel information system.
The three paper machines of the mill produce annually about 900 tons of paper. The 20 years of cooperation with Protacon found its natural follow-up with the upgrade of the old reel information system into the RoAd system, tailored to the needs of the paper mill.
With the RoAd system, the mill received a smart and flexible tool for reel load optimisation and automation of logistics. The smooth functioning of logistics is indeed one of the cornerstones of the Rauma paper mill production.
– There are no storage spaces in the mill area, but the reels are loaded directly onto trailers from two packaging lines and then transferred to interim storage spaces located in the port area. This requires that the reel information system, which runs the logistic operations, works with a 100% reliability. Perfect operation of the reel information system is extremely important for the entire mill operation, says the mill’s maintenance engineer Hannu Väinölä.
Packaging and logistics now function with optimal efficiency
– Our decades-long cooperation with Protacon guaranteed that we had a software partner with a profound understanding of the complicated operational environment of paper mills. It is very important that our IT partner understands our needs and targets, both system engineer Jari Holm and Hannu Väinölä state.
After thorough testing, the RoAd system was introduced during a single shutdown in November 2017.
– Thanks to the RoAd system, we achieved optimal reel wrapping and logistic operations, which supported our previously implemented scheme for reducing transportation equipment. Now, reels are pre-sorted based on their weights, dimensions and storage locations to ensure the highest possible efficiency of logistic operations. The RoAd system also facilitates maintenance, as the information about reel transfers is also made available to the maintenance personnel, says Holm summing up the benefits of the system.
– We put a strong focus on continuously improving safety and increasing efficiency in all our development activities. These were our targets also when planning the upgrade of the reel information system.
