ProDrives: the best and most cost-effective solution
Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Ltd. (“Lee & Man Paper”) is a world leading paper and pulp manufacturer. Lee & Man Paper invested in two tissue production lines, TM 9 and TM 10, at the same time in 2016 in order to seize the Chinese tissue paper market. Both paper machines were delivered by Voith. Protacon supplied new ProDrives sectional drive control systems for the two lines.
“This was the first collaboration between Lee & Man Paper and Protacon. During the startup, we were a little worried about the ultimate performance of the drive system, since we needed to make some modifications in the application. Nevertheless, the project was completed successfully, and now the ProDrives system works really well”, says Lee & Man Paper’s electrical equipment manager Mr. Zeng Yong.
To enable virtual operation of the machine, simulators were used in the application development of the ProDrives sectional drive. All the necessary functions could be tested in advance, thus minimising the startup time at the mill. Marko Loisa, business manager in Protacon’s drives and automation sector, was responsible for the application specification and project management in Finland.
“We delivered a sectional drive control system for the customer’s two tissue paper machines. The applications were incorporated in the customer’s own Siemens PCS7 system. Sectional drive control systems have traditionally been considered demanding applications in paper machines. The development and delivery of a demanding product without problems is always a pleasure”, explains Mr. Loisa contentedly.
The installation progressed as planned at the mill in China
The installation was supervised by Guohua Yang, Protacon’s project engineer: “Once the customer had installed the PLC and drive cabinets, we turned on the control power supply to the cabinets. After it we tested all control signals that could be tested by debugging the ProDrives application. It was a pleasure to take part in the ProDrives project, it enriched my work experience and convinced me of Protacon’s technological strength in the paper machine industry.”
For the further development, Mr. Zeng has a few ideas. For example, the HMI could be more intuitive when the system appears with fault: the HMI could directly display the failed equipment with a pre-defined colour. He also sees that the ProDrives HMI could be somewhat narrower showing to the operator only the necessary succinct operation displays.
On the whole, when asked about possible future cooperation with Protacon, Mr. Zeng replies: “As electrical equipment manager, I am looking forward to opportunities to work with Protacon in the future. Regarding paper machines and sectional drive systems, Protacon’s ProDrives is no doubt the best and most cost-effective solution.”
