Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m Heikki-Jussi, everyone at work calls me Heku. I work as a full-stack developer, as a part of the client’s team. In 2015, I received an MA degree in information technology from Jyväskylä, where I also worked during my studies. I spent 2016 establishing Protacon’s office in Kuopio.

What does a Software Developer do at Protacon?

A Software Developer transforms coffee into code. I design and develop software according to the ever-changing needs and wishes of our clients. I try to solve clients’ problems, also if they’re not even aware of them. In software development, we implement nifty methods that enable us to correspond even to rapidly-changing demands. My normal work day includes C#, JavaScript or SQL programming, weekly client meetings, and solving technical challenges with my colleagues.

How did you end up in your current job?

Already during my studies, I started teaching elementary and game programming part-time at the University of Jyväskylä. Everything started to click into place in 2012, when I got an internship at Protacon as a testing-oriented programmer. For the rest of my studies, I worked for Protacon on a part-time basis, and after graduation, I continued working full-time. In my work, I’m broadly responsible for product development, programming, and partially also testing and maintenance.

How do you recover from work?

During my time off, I like coding my hobby projects, because I get to apply things I’ve already learned, and to learn new things. I also play video games, such as Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe, where you have to build logistics solutions. Its relaxed pace and the opportunity to solve complex problems are addictive. Besides tinkering on the computer, I play disc golf, and I try to keep in shape with different kinds of exercise.
